A Hot Meal in the Cold Wilderness
When I first saw the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet, I was suspicious-freeze-dried sausage and eggs didn’t sound particularly appetizing. However, after a chilly pre-dawn camping trip when I could see my breath, I decided to give it a try, and the smell of cooking peppers and hash browns wafting from that tiny pouch actually surprised me. This meal comes with eggs, sausage, peppers, and shredded potatoes, all freeze-dried for easy preparation and convenience. To make it, all I did was boil some water in my portable stove and pour it in the pouch. After waiting about 10 minutes, it was all ready to eat. Although it costs a bit more than a granola bar, the under-$10 price feels fair for the quality and simplicity it provides, especially when you’re miles away from a kitchen. I expected something rubbery or bland, but the potatoes had texture, the sausage had a smoky flavor, and it was surprisingly filling. It’s also gluten-free, which doesn’t necessarily affect me, but it is good for those whose diets adhere to it. I loved how light, easy, and genuinely tasty it was, though it is slightly salty and requires boiling water since there’s no cold prep option. Overall, I’d give the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet a solid 5 out of 5 stars and would definitely purchase it again. It’s perfect for campers, hikers, or even an emergency food supply-if you want a hot, homemade-style breakfast in the wilderness, this one delivers.

Tip-top!
When I was in college, I, “accidentally” found my way into an old Cold War bomb shelter. There were lots of freeze dried meals, so I liberated a few, being a poor college student. After eating a couple of them, I decided that it would actually be better to die in a nuclear holocaust than to have to survive on those things.fast forward to 2025. I’ve tried a whole bunch of camping meals by many different manufacturers and they all have left me wanting for a variety of reasons. Either the food was bland or it was just disgusting or the packaging was bad. I heard that this brand was supposed to be really good. A friend of mine who is a nurse sent me a text message one night saying that she was hungry but the cafeteria was closed and nobody would deliver food that late. I sent her four of these meals, all different, and suggested that she keep one in her bag and one in her car for just such an occasion. She told me that they were delicious. I bought a bunch of them for myself and I have to agree. These meals are wayyyyy better than anything I’ve ever tried. They have great flavor, great texture and are substantial in size. The packaging is awesome. It is thick, heavy material with a zip lock that really holds in the moisture. This is important for two reasons. I add the hot water, seal the bag and let it sit for five minutes and then I turn it over upside down for another five minutes so that the remaining water drains down to the top of the bag and hydrates everything up there. I have yet to have a single drop leak out. Really a great value for the money at 10 bucks. I keep them around for those situations where I’m working at 2 o’clock in the morning and I am really hungry, but don’t want to take the time to make food. I can get a great meal in 10 minutes.

Pretty good but cook thoroughly.
After many years of seeing these freezdried meals I decided to finally test one out on a recent camping trip.Impressions :1. The packaging is a little bulkier than what you could carry/pack yourself if you are trying to space save while backpacking, may be worth repacking into ziploc if planning to use within a day or so.2. Preparation: boiling water was easy. while I stirred thoroughly, It did not fully mix and I ended up with some “undercooked” bits at the bottom. Make sure you stir well in bottom creases of bag.3. Taste and portion was pretty good for one person and I felt satisfied. Although some of the sausage chunks were a bit hard/underhydrated even though I followed the directions on the bag.I’d recommend pouring the entire contents of the bag into your boiling water pot and keep heating for a minute or so before pouring back into original bag to finish soaking, to help fully cook through. Or repack in ziploc and just cook as desired in your camp pot if you don’t mind cleaning it afterwards.Overall though it met expectations and was easier and better than what I could make on my own in the backcountry, although they are a bit expensive.

Mountain House Breakfast Skillet – A Culinary Adventure in Regret
Mountain House Breakfast Skillet – A Culinary Adventure in RegretAh yes, the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet — for when you want to experience the thrill of eating a meal that tastes like it was cooked by someone who’s only ever heard of breakfast. To its credit, it does exactly what it says: it exists and it’s food-like. Eggs? Check. Potatoes? Technically. Sausage? Sort of. If your goal is to feel like you’re on a rugged mountain expedition while sitting on your couch questioning your life choices, this is the product for you.The first bite hits like a nostalgic memory of something you once liked — then reality sets in. The texture is somewhere between “campfire nostalgia” and “packing foam soaked in regret.” Add too little water, and you’re crunching on hash-brown gravel. Add too much, and congratulations, you’ve made “breakfast soup.”But hey, credit where it’s due — it’s filling. Mostly because your appetite gives up halfway through.⭐ 5 stars for convenience.⭐ 1 star for taste.⭐ Bonus star for making you appreciate real bacon, real eggs, and civilization.Final Verdict:Perfect for backpacking, emergencies, or reminding yourself that you should’ve brought Pop-Tarts instead.
